Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence in year 1997 as a result of the agreement signed on 15th November, 1992 between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide. 

INFRASTRUCTURE

SMIT is one of India’s premier technology and management institutes. Spread across 35 beautifully landscaped acres, the campus is home to over 3200 students, 220 members of faculty  and a large and efficient team of support staff. The institute is reputed for its state of the art infrastructure, well stocked air-conditioned library, advanced technology laboratories, a sports complex with swimming pool, food court, separate boys and girls hostels with rooms having attached baths, 24 hours running water with hot water facilities for winters, night canteens inside hostels, a electrical sub-station for 24 hour generator support etc. . All these facilities and amenities have made SMIT one of the best and most sought after engineering and management institutes in the nation.

ACADEMICS

The academic standard of SMIT is at par with the best institutes in the country. A highly qualified and dedicated faculty ensure that the students are provided with a holistic education that makes them job ready, industry ready and most important, life ready. The curriculum followed is prepared in consultation with industry experts and leading academicians from premier institutes like IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University, TAPMI etc. The course content is revised every three years to meet the changing demands of the industry. It is not without reason that our glittering alumni are placed with reputed organizations like Microsoft, Oracle, SAP Laps, TCS and also pursue higher studies from IIT’s, IIM’s and foreign universities .

RESEARCH

Research is the life blood of a sound academic institute.  SMIT takes pride in the fact that it has emerged as a research friendly institute. A number of scholars have been awarded with PhD and many more scholars from within and outside the institute are registered for doctorate. A number of sponsored projects have also been assigned to SMIT. The faculty members are also selected to do research on about 50+ sponsored projects approved and financed by DST, DBT,DRDO and AICTE. As a result, apart from books, a number of papers by the members of the faculty are also published in peer reviewed, high index journals of international repute. AMBIENCE

The ambience of the college gives the students a feeling of a home away from home. Being a residential college, it attracts students not only from Sikkim but also from all over the country. The Institute provides full residential facilities to the students. There are separate well equipped and furnished hostels for boys and girls. The hostels provide excellent accommodation to nearly 3000 students. All rooms have attached bathrooms. To cater to the students nutrition needs, the institute provides canteens and food courts apart from a professionally run mess.

HEALTH CARE

The institute has a well equipped dispensary and two resident doctors with support staff. Those requiring specialized treatment are sent to Central Referral Hospital (CRH), a part of Sikkim Manipal University in Tadong, Gangtok.

FACILITIES

In order to make the campus a self contained institute catering to all the needs of the students and the staff, a shopping centre has been provided wherein facilities like ATMs, Stationery, Binding, Lamination, and Photocopying etc. are available.

LIBRARY

The library is a two-storied building with 2960sq.m carpet area. SMIT library has built up a rich collection on all branches of Engineering, Science and Management. The seating capacity for library is 541 users at a time. The library open from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm on all working days and 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on all second Saturdays and Sunday.

EDUCATION BEYOND ACADEMICS

Apart from academics, the students are provided with ample opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities so that their latent talents are nourished and allowed to flourish. Each department holds its annual fest and the much awaited annual fest of the institute, KAALRAV is held in February. These activities also help them to cultivate a spirit of healthy competitiveness.
